Solamargine is a natural steroidal glycoalkaloid found in various species of Solanum plants such as Solanum sodomaeum (devils apple). Solamargine has been shown to have potent cytotoxicity to human hepatocyte (Hep3B) and normal skin fibroblasts with evidence that solamargine is responsible for cell death by apoptosis.
In other studies Solamargine was assayed against murine Ehrlich carcinoma and human K562 leukaemia cultured cells. The exposure in vitro of these cancer cells to Solamargine resulted in dose-dependent growth inhibition.
The results indicated significant cytotoxic activities against Ehrlich carcinoma and K562 leukaemia cells. The low activity of the aglycone (solasodine) indicated that the role of the sugar moiety is very important in the cytotoxic activity of Solamargine.
