Undaria fucogalactan is a polysaccharide isolated and purified from the brown seaweed Undaria pinnatifida. While most fucans from the brown seaweeds contain some galactose, this polysaccharide contains the highest proprtion so far described and has therefore been named a fucogalactan. The fucose content of this polysaccharide is approx. 32.6% with a galactose content of approx. 25.2% plus uronic acid (approx. 4.0%) and sulfate (approx. 29.6%), it has a high molecular weight (2,000,000 kDa). Fucogalactan is under investigation for possible therapeutic indications including anti-inflammatory properties, immuno-modulating activities, inhibition of tumor growth, stem cell replentishment, activity, dementia and ulcer healing
